FAQs

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and submission techniques. It originated in Brazil and evolved from the Japanese martial art of Judo and traditional Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ places a strong emphasis on leverage, technique, and strategy, allowing practitioners to overcome physically stronger opponents through skill and precision.

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the primary goal is to control and submit an opponent using various joint locks and chokeholds. The art emphasizes positional dominance, where practitioners aim to achieve superior positions on the ground that provide control and options for submitting their opponent. Unlike many other martial arts, BJJ is often practiced at a slower pace, focusing on technique and precision rather than brute force.

Upon walking in, you will be greated by one of our instructors and introduced to the facility. You will then be able to get changed in one of our private changing areas and then you can join the class.

You will warm up with the class and then you will be paired up with an experienced team member to make sure you are understanding the lesson for the day and so you can ask questions.

Following instruction, live sparring (also known as "rolling") will begin. We encourage newcomers to take part (again with an experienced team member) if they feel comfortable, otherwise you can watch and observe.

After class you can clean off in our shower and then change before heading home.

If you would like to participate in the gi class, it is advisable that you purchase a gi in advance. We do have some rental equipment but there is no guarantee it will be available.

If you would like to only participate in nogi, all you will need is a pair of shorts (preferrably without pockets), leggings, or spats and a shirt (preferrably made of compression material) or rashguard.

If you have questions about equipment or equipment recommendations, let us know and we will recommend affordable options that suit your needs.

You will never be required to only wear equipment or merchandise that we sell.

If you are looking to just check out the gym, we offer a free class before you need to purchase a membership. We also offer day passes if you interested in just stopping in every now and then.

There will never be a requirement to compete while you train at Tackle. While we do actively encourage people to compete, you will never be pressured into competing if that is something you are not interested in.

We actively encourage our members to cross train at other gyms. It's a great way to experience other styles and augment your regular training.

There are no fees associated with either starting or canceling a membership. There are also no sign up fees.
